Ontario electricity plans: common questions
What's the difference between TOU, ULO, and Tiered electricity plans in Ontario?
Time-of-Use (TOU) charges different rates at on-peak, mid-peak, and off-peak hours. Ultra-Low Overnight (ULO) adds a very cheap overnight rate (typically 11pm–7am) but a higher on-peak rate. Tiered pricing charges one flat rate up to a monthly threshold, then a higher rate above it. The cheapest plan depends entirely on when you actually use electricity.
Is ULO cheaper than TOU?
ULO is usually cheaper if you can shift heavy usage — like EV charging, laundry, or running the dishwasher — into the overnight window. If most of your usage is during the day and evening, TOU or Tiered is often cheaper. This tool compares all three on your real hourly usage so you don't have to guess.
How do I get my Alectra hourly usage data?
Log in to the Alectra Utilities portal, open your usage details, and download the hourly usage export (the Usage_*.xlsx files). Each file is one day of hourly readings. Drop them into the optimizer and it parses them automatically.
Does charging an electric vehicle (EV) overnight change which plan is cheapest?
Often, yes. Adding EV charging load to the cheap overnight hours can make Ultra-Low Overnight (ULO) the clear winner. The optimizer includes an interactive EV-charging slider so you can see the break-even point for your own driving and charging habits.
Is this electricity rate comparison free?
Yes. You can analyze up to 3 days of usage for free with full TOU, ULO, and Tiered comparisons plus the EV slider. A one-time Pro pass unlocks unlimited analysis so you can run a full month or year of usage at once.
Are the rates accurate and up to date?
Rates are based on the current OEB-regulated Alectra prices, with a best-effort live lookup and a validated fallback. Estimates cover the energy line only — delivery, regulatory charges, and the Ontario Electricity Rebate are identical across all three plans, so they don't change which plan is cheapest.
